What are the general criteria for art? The word “art” derived from the Greek word “techne” which meant “craft, skill, technique” and therefore originally suggested a very strong dexterous component to art. Aristotle, on the other hand, underlined a significant cognitive aspect of art by defining it as an “ability to execute something with apt comprehension”. Music, as well as poetry, has not always been considered an art per se, mainly because of its inspirational and somewhat irrational nature. It was not until recently that Western thinkers have agreed upon standard groupings of the arts. However, this perceived division of arts – between prophets and artisans – still remains. A poet and a performer are viewed more as irrational, inspirational creators, and we can appreciate the aesthetic value of their work by primarily employing the left hemisphere of our brain.
